in & outside of time

poetry and four instruments in dialogue with nature – an open conversation

our earth is reduced to a mere object of use. exploited, observed, perceived and abandoned. in the performance ‘in & outside of time’, five performers engage with the specific venue. we improvise, using our instruments and texts by robert lax, e.e. cummings and hermann de vries. we allow ourselves to be guided by the sounds, formations and the people around them, becoming part of nature. or nature becomes part of the performance. sound, texts and the respective space are of equal importance and influence one another.

the natural space we play in is just as much a protagonist as the musicians, the texts and the sounds. in terms of format, there is the possibility of performing both indoors and outdoors.

for a performance, we arrive at the designated venue two days before the date to attune ourselves to the space and integrate its acoustics, sounds and accessibility. outdoors, we perform acoustically, with only the two voices amplified. the performance can be lead into by a guided walk in nature, or a longer hike. during the walk, elements of sensory awareness – inspired by feldenkrais or deep listening – are incorporated. they allow to enhance the presence of all participants, to broaden one’s perception and to stimulate the senses.

stepping outside of time
being inside a moment
being inside a space
being inside a sound
being inside a word

bringing together space, sound and words. an improvisation with sound and voice, nourished and shaped by a site in a natural architecture. exchanging with its elements: water, stone, vegetation and all the critters living there. weaving together a structure produced through this site and its resonance: sounds, voices, bodies and instruments. where all these elements have their place, not one being the base or illustration of the other. space, rhythm, time/stillness: finding an own tempo, a slowness that opens the eye and the ear to a deep form of perception.

feeling a space, a certain location, the material it is made of, and connecting to it. to bring about a ground connection, a base frequency: a connection to the place one is in, and to each other. like mycorrhizal networks are used by other species in order to communicate, we will expand our nervous systems to become porous to the rhythm and pulse of our surrounding, knitting a kinship between the natural, organic matter we are surrounded by and ourselves. synchronic, simultaneous. same phase, same temporality. an interrelation between minds, bodies and space. a coexistence.

working method

the work is an open invitation to compose a space together, with each other. we will approach the natural space with all our senses, take time to feel how being there affects our perception. we will nourish our relationship to the location, establishing our specific ground connection: sensing it, playing with it, tuning it, deepening it. the sensorial information we receive will interact with the way we play.

all participating artists share the experience of many years improvising, and a working aesthetics of
dialogue and exchange. we will create a shared space and an open and strong relation to each other. we are in movement, transversally in our activities and move onto unknown territories, into interstices.

the natural surrounding will leave an imprint on each performer who will bring this influence into the concert venue, in his*her own way of expression. playing in a chasm or a natural rock formation would be the ideal setting to allow performers and spectators alike to tune into the organic rhythm of the surrounding landscape; to hear, smell, see and perceive with all senses. if that is not possible, we will bring the natural space with all aspects we can grasp into the performance space: in our timing and through our interactions, through rhythm, sound and silence, and also through sculptural elements (like logs, leaves, stones, sculptures made of organic material etc.).
